"The true beauty of music is that it connects people. It carries a message and we, the musicians, are the messengers."
Ric Mills’ latest immersive title, ‘Sleep Cycle’ is a profound and mindful reflection of our unconscious experience, with all the classical characteristics of Max Richter’s ‘From Sleep’, and the cinematic warmth of Thomas Newman. Over the course of the two-hour album, the tracks build in intensity and depth and soften again to flow with your circadian sleep cycles.
The result is a fluid dreamscape of meticulously composed movements, where the edges between wakefulness and sleep are intentionally blurred. Listeners are swept away in a tide of soothing synths, soulful pipe organ and Joshua Bell’s sweeping strings, making ‘Sleep Cycle’ the perfect aural accompaniment to a good night’s rest.
Liberosis is a modern psychological word meaning 'the desire to care less about things'. As we mature into adults, we take on more and more responsibilities. Liberosis is the feeling you get when you wish you could be a child again, without cares and concerns.
Ric's most intimate recording here highlights some really beautiful and simple moments in life as depicted from the most honest and well worn strings of Ric's home upright piano.
The central theme for the entire album is of optimistic HOPE - pure, raw and honest. It is the journey of recovery. This could be recovery from a depressive illness, a heartbreak, an addiction, a failed relationship or from an unhappy life to a happy one. Every track on the album is themed to a particular 'way' to hope for a more positive future.
Gentle and uncomplicated melodic ideas are explored using a beautifully treated felt piano and encased in appropriately ethereal synths. The harmonies often begin simple and find their way through a path of interchanging inversions to a place of tranquility, light and the utopia you often dreamed about.
It is worth hoping for a better outcome. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain.
PROFOUNDLY PIANO -
A PERSONAL SKETCHBOOK
"There are times in life we feel things are happening for a reason and they seem to conclude in an organised happy way, other times there's a great chaos and dis- organisation to things and the outcome is not what we intended or thought would happen. Equally there are moments where we experience a sort of on-going never changing situation despite our will to change it but even then there is beauty in the pattern and yearning to grow and becomes something better.
The album finds profundity in all areas of life and mirrors what we feel at those intense moments; be it joy, gratitude, love or ones family or friends, but also boredom, frustration, being stuck in a rut, these are all perfectly valid emotions and when felt strong they can only be profoundly represented by music.
We don't always do things perfectly and these sketchbooks of original compositions encapsulate that. They are well meaning ideas that have grown for better or worse into something far different to what was expected."
Found is the debut solo release of piano and string quartet by British born Pianist & Composer Ric Mills. He describes this album as follows:
“Found is a suite of eight pieces that have been in formation for many years. Although the ideas behind the structures are harmonically simple and very accessible they flow from a period of intense introspection, an inward self-discovery, and the result is a reflection of the ‘real you’. I’ve been composing functional and formulaic music for many years and answerable to others in terms of music creation - although a great learning experience and an enjoyable period in my life, it is amazing to actually feel, compose and perform the music that is a truer expression of who I am."
My life has always orbited around music. It’s taught me resilience and strength and impacted my life in more ways than I can count.
I’ve tutored hundreds of young people, feeling immense pride as I saw my students grow through music; learning discipline, commitment and courage – just as I had done.
I’ve composed hundreds of scores. In fact, millions of people have been moved by my music worldwide – even if they don’t know it. I’ve won awards for the way it connected audiences with the action and the characters on screen.
In some ways my entire life has been preparing me to be the composer I am today. After all, sharing my love of music has always been at the heart of everything I’ve done. It’s given me a sense of identity, has been a constant source of comfort and a way to express myself.
In 2010, I lost my mum. Then just 2 short years later, my Dad passed away from cancer. I was crushed. Not long afterwards my wife and I welcomed two beautiful daughters into the world – and everything changed. It was then that I realised how important it was to leave them with a powerful legacy. Composing and teaching music solely for others began to feel… hollow. And soon this feeling began to overwhelm me.
Feeling powerless and lost, I spiralled into depression.
Deep down, I knew I needed to reclaim my relationship with music. So, after 5 gruelling years, I sat with my fingers poised over the keys and let the melodies flow out of me, raw and unfiltered. And that’s how my first album, ‘Found’ was born.
I felt an enormous sense of relief as the notes filled the pages. It gave me a sense of calm and profound purpose. Music has rescued me and pulled me out of the darkness – helping me share my journey and through that, a powerful connection with my listeners.
Since then, I’ve produced two more albums, ‘Profoundly Piano’ and ‘Naked Hope’, going from 8 to 28,000 regular listeners a month in just 6 months. And my music continues to receive regular airtime on UK classical station, Scala Radio.
So, if you’re looking for music that reaches deep into your soul, I invite you to close your eyes and immerse yourself in my music.
